BTS: Designing the Comia Premium Smartpillow
| nechama silberberg
Four years.
That’s how long it took to bring the Comia SmartPillow to life.
The idea was born the day my daughter, Naomi, was born. In those early, hazy, beautiful days of motherhood, I found myself constantly wondering: Why isn’t there a feeding pillow that actually supports me — physically and emotionally? One that gives me insight into how much my baby is eating, tells me when my baby last fed and what side she is up to, while also feeling like a cozy, comforting place for us both?
So I started designing. Not because I had the time (spoiler: I didn’t), nor because i thought of myself as an inventor entrepreneur (second spoiler: I didn't), but because i knew this product had to exist for me as a mom and for so many other moms as well. What began as a sketch in a notebook turned into years of prototypes, test runs, scrapped ideas, breakthroughs, and late-night Google Docs.
The Mission:
To create a feeding pillow that’s not only soft and supportive — but smart.
We worked obsessively to make sure the Comia Premium SmartPillow could give accurate weight measurements, so parents could track how much their baby drank before and after each feeding. Sounds simple, right? It wasn’t. It took version after version to get it right. Every millimeter mattered. Every reading needed to be reliable. Babies are tiny — and the data needs to be precise.
But it couldn’t just work in theory — it had to work in the real world. So we spent countless hours with real babies and their mothers, testing every detail. Watching how they held their babies. Listening to what felt good, what didn’t, what made them tense, what brought them ease. Those moments — raw, honest, beautiful — shaped everything. We fine-tuned the Comia until it didn’t just function — it supported. It soothed. It helped.
Still, being “smart” wasn’t enough. I wanted it to be the best-feeling pillow a parent could imagine. Beautiful. Soft. Supportive. A product you’re proud to leave out on your couch or nursery glider. A pillow that feels like a gentle hug during the most tender, overwhelming, intimate moments of early parenthood.
One of the surprisingly tricky parts? The halo light. I became obsessed with getting it just right. Too bright, and it’d jolt a baby from sleep. Too dim, and you’d fumble in the dark. We fine-tuned it until it was the perfect glow — enough to help with latching, but gentle enough to keep the peace of nighttime feedings.
And then something incredible happened: right before launch, a new addition joined our family. And I got to use the Comia Spart Pillow as a mom, not just a founder.
It was surreal. Emotional. Powerful. I had created this product for myself — for the mom I was when Naomi was born. And now, I was able to use it in real time. It gave me confidence. It gave me comfort. It reminded me why I started this journey in the first place.
Launching the Comia Spart Pillow is the biggest gift I’ve ever given myself — and now I’m sharing it with you. To every new parent out there: I hope this pillow supports you as deeply as it supported me. You deserve nothing less.
